What's Happening?

April 30, 2011

On April 30th the Southwestern University CKI met with members of the Kiwanis Club of Sun City for an "End of the Year Celebration".

After winning awards at the Texas-Oklahoma District Convention of CKI for 1) The Best Service Project, 2) The Best Secretary, 3) The Best President, AND 4) The Best Club, it was an opportunity for Club members to congratulate CKI members for these wonderful honors.  There were over 30 members of both clubs attending dinner at Dos Salsas, which was arranged by the Kiwanis Advisor to CKI, Gene Jantzen.  Food was good; company was great!  Picture below shows 2010-11 and 2011-12 CKI officers and members with Gayle and Jack Noble outside Dos Salsas following a fun evening.

Happy New Year!

Circle K International of Southwestern University was re-chartered last fall and we wasted no time in helping out the community.  We participated in Texas Mission of Mercy, which provided free dental care for over 800 patients, Coats for Kids in Round Rock, and several members collected cans on Halloween.  In November, our club hosted an Italian themed dinner open to our campus and we sold 85 tickets.  Thank you so much to the Kiwanians who came and supported us!  Our club really appreciates all that you do for us.

Our club also adopted Upward Bound as our year long after school program.  Upward Bound is a federally funded educational program that aims to prepare selected low-income and first-generation high school students for a postsecondary education.  Members of CKI mentor Georgetown area high school students during the week.  Additionally, CKI of SU even led a campus tour for those specifically involved in the program.

Last November we also did a food, toy, and clothing drive that was called Piratas para Matehuala (Pirates for Matehuala).  We received collections from the campus community for poor families in the city of Matehuala, which is in the Mexican state San Luis.  Many of the families live in shacks and they make things out of what they can find.  The collected goods were gift wrapped and then our president, Juan Juarez, treasurer, Roberto Juarez, and their family delivered the goods the day before Christmas Eve.  We hope this becomes an annual event that will continue long after we have all graduated.

We are also participating in the Governor’s Project this year which is called Rejoice Charity.  This organization serves children who are living with HIV in a province in northern Thailand.  Each club is asked to raise $200 which would provide one child’s school fees for an entire year.  More information can be found here: http://www.rejoicethailand.org/.

Finally, we are prepping for our first ever district convention.  The convention is March 6-8 in Irving, Texas.

It should be an exciting year and we can’t wait to begin!
