President's Letter
Here we are in the first month of
2010. 2009 sure went past in a hurry and if you happened
to be a little north of Georgetown, 2009 went out with a
flurry (of snow).
I am certain 2010 will pass at least
as quickly and I think at least as productively for our
Sun City Kiwanis Club as well as the Texas–Oklahoma
District and Kiwanis International.
There are two significant events
coming up involving the T-O District and Kiwanis
International. The first is the Mid–Winter meeting in
Irving,
TX. Feb. 12 & 13. This is a great
opportunity to learn more about the opportunities and
activities within the T-O District and gather helpful
hints from other Kiwanians. The International Kiwanis
Convention will be held in Las Vegas this year, June 24 thru 27. Not only
are the Las Vegas
attractions beckoning but the T-O District is lending
strong support to Randy Delay from the
Houston
area, who is a candidate for Vice President. He would
assume the Presidency of Kiwanis International in 2011,
if elected. Randy is an excellent candidate and is
deserving of our support. I encourage you to seriously
consider participating in both of these events.
It is not too early to turn our
thoughts to the Sun City Spring Garage Sale. Keep your
eyes open for those “treasures” that could be put to
good use by others, and if you have any left over fondue
Pots, they are always welcome. The two yearly Garage
Sales here in Sun City
give a good boost in our fund raising efforts as we
strive to “Change the World One Community and One Child
at a Time.” We also combine Service and Fellowship in
all of our activities.
While we have just completed a very
successful Holiday Home Tour, the time is rapidly
approaching to start work on the 2010 HHT. This is a
golden opportunity to have a great impact in our fund
raising and support for Williamson County children. Let
your talents be used in this annual effort.
2010 can be a Banner Year for us all.

Comments from the
President-Elect
Now
that we all complained so mightily about the record setting
hot weather in the summer of ’09, we have now had
record-breaking cold weather in January 2010!
What a year!
But, what would we talk about
if not for the weather?!?!
January signaled the last meeting of the
Holiday Home Tour Committees.
Written and oral reports were submitted by various
committee chairs to pass on to future committees.
The net proceeds were over $29,000.
Congratulations to all who worked so hard on this
fundraiser! Now
it is February and time to start work on the 2010 Holiday
Home Tour. Any
volunteers?
February 2, First Tuesday, is The Caring
Place Day. On
the “Always Needed” List are canned meats, canned fruits and
condiments – salt, pepper, mustard, ketchup, vinegar, etc.
Be sure to bring in canned goods or money.
The Caring Place has great need for both.
February 2, First Tuesday, is also the
day Fish City Grill gives a percentage of its daily income
to a Williamson County non-profit.
The recipient for the month of February is Meals On
Wheels. The
Kiwanis Club of Sun City has made it a point to support the
other service clubs in our area.
We all think that it is the right thing to do.
We all like good food, AND we hope that those clubs
will reciprocate when it is our turn for First Tuesday.
You also might want to make reservations
to attend the Friends of the Library Author Series February
25 featuring Stephen Harrigan, the author of
The Gates of the
Alamo, a novel about the siege and fall of the
legendary Alamo.
Support of the FOL is another way we can
support literacy in our community.
One last reminder about February:
early voting will be from February 16-26.
Primary Election Day is March 2.
Don’t forget to vote!
February 9 is our quarterly breakfast
meeting. We will
be joined by some members of the Richarte Key Club who will
give us a report on their attendance at Weekend of a
Lifetime (WOAL).
They will also be bringing their famous chocolate
strawberries for you to buy for your sweetheart.
What a perfect gift for Valentine’s Day: chocolate
and fruit!
Yummmm! Bring
money!
