President's Letter

President John HopperAlthough the date above is June, 2010, as this is written it is still May of this year, 2010.

The early drafting of this epistle is dictated by the calendar and medical condition of the people who help produce it. By the time you read this, we will have aided in the formal education of young folks in Williamson County and the informal education of the countless young folks we encounter throughout the year.

We have opportunities to show through our actions how we have worked to leave our community and country a much better locale than we found. What have you done in this regard???? We have many opportunities to live up to the Kiwanis challenge to ..”change the world one community and one child at a time”. This “change” should not be construed to refer to any political statement. Kiwanis intends to provide the opportunity to children world-wide to be engaged citizens of their town, city, country and the world.

How can we contribute to the efforts to make Kiwanis a more effective force? Look at your experience throughout life and see how that can help the children of Williamson County. Can you aid a struggling child in Math, English, Civics, Sports, or another very worth-while endeavor. Remember – we don’t just provide $$$, we contribute our talents.

In accordance with our recent history this will be the last Newsletter until August of this year. This doesn’t mean Kiwanis is taking a break but we all need a chance to take a breath. Between now and August your Club will be represented at the Kiwanis International Convention where several important changes to Kiwanis International Rules & Regulations will be considered. Rest assured that the direction of your Board of Directors will be will be followed for the benefit of the group.

To those who are traveling in the near future – Go with our best wishes and we look forward to your safe return. To those who remain in Sun City, Texas (otherwise known as Paradise) – Stay as cool as possible.

John Hopper

Comments from the President-Elect

President-Elect Gayle NobleThe month of June will be an exciting one for Kiwanians all over the world.  The Kiwanis International Convention will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, the latter part of June.  Several members of our club will be attending:  John and Georgia Hopper, Bill and Lydia Rives, Gene and Renee Jantzen, Sheri Salley, and Jack and Gayle Noble are registered as of May 14, 2010.

Randy Delay, a long-time active member of Kiwanis from Texas is running for Vice President of Kiwanis International.  Obviously, he is trying to get as many delegates as possible from the Texas-Oklahoma District registered to cast their votes for him.  He and his representatives will also meet with delegates from other districts to drum up support.  There will be two (2) Delegate Sessions during which elections will take place for 2011-2012 Officers and Trustees for Kiwanis International.  Amendments to the International By-laws will also be considered.

The Kiwanis International Conventions are much like any other convention of a large organization.  There will be motions, seconds, amendments to motions, points of order, motions to table amendments and, finally, someone who calls the question.  At the last five (5) Kiwanis International Conventions we have attended, it has been the same delegate at each convention who calls the question repeatedly.  Although they sometimes drone on and drag on, I find observing the process interesting and fascinating.

Before the convention in Las Vegas Jack and I are going to my 50th high school reunion.  That certainly shoots holes in my 39-years old story; but, hopefully, none of you will remember when I announce my next 39th birthday!!

Thanks to the many of you who have agreed to work as Committee Chairs in 2010-2011.  I would especially like to thank Alexia Griffin, Myra Hill and Sandra Montgomery who agreed to Co-Chair the Holiday Home Tour Committee.  They have all of their Committee Chairs in place and have had two (2) official meetings already.  In the coming months you will be introduced to others who have agreed to work for you and our Kiwanis Club of Sun City.

Congratulations to the new officers for 2010-2011:  Paul Golay, President Elect, Pat Cole, Secretary, and Larry King, Treasurer.  Also, congratulations to the new directors:  Ginger Beavers, Marshall Pearlstein and Barbara White.  You all have chosen a good team for next year!

Gayle Noble
